How to Build an LED Flex Light

Light-emitting diode flex lighting provides an impressive display of lights that are energy-efficient and long-lasting, but they can be expensive. If you want to get the effect of LED strip lights but don't want to pay store prices, then build your own. The light is fun to make and you will gain the pleasure of telling your friends and family members that you did it yourself.

Instructions
1
Measure the distance of the place where you want to put your LED flex lights. Add a couple of extra feet so that the lights don't have to go in a straight line.

2
Cut the clear flexible hollow tube the length you calculated with a sharp knife. Cut a strip of wire with a knife the same length as the tube you just cut, but add an extra few feet to allow for the wires to connect to the power source. For example, if the LED flex lighting tube is 6 feet and the distance from each end of the tube to the power source is 6 feet, you need to cut a strip of wire 18 feet long.

Cut the strip of wire into smaller strips. Cut two strips of wire the distance you measured from the power source to where the LED flex light tube begins. Using the previous example, cut two strips of wire 6 foot long. This leaves you with the strip of wire that goes inside the tube. Put the other two strips of wire to one side and keep the wire strip that goes inside the tube.

4
Work out the number of LED lights you want to wire in the tube; the more you use, the better the lighting effect will be. Make a note of the number of LEDs on a sheet of paper. Cut the wire strip that will go inside the tube into equal, short strips. The number of strips depends on the number of LED lights, but is always two less than the number of lights. For example, if you are wiring 20 LED lights, you will need 18 equal, short strips.

5
Remove just under ? inch of outer plastic off of the ends of every strip of wire with wire strippers. This includes the two long wires you earlier put to one side.

6
Insert the LED light bulbs into the bulb holders if they are not already fitted. Gently push them into the holder with your fingers. Read the side of an LED bulb to determine the voltage and make a note of it on a sheet of paper.

7
Attach the end of one of the two long wire strips to the first LED light holder terminal. LED light holders use two small terminal clips. Press the clip with your fingers and insert the wire in the opening. Release the clip so that it holds the wire in place.

8
Attach the end of a short wire strip to the other terminal clip on the first light holder. Attach the opposite end to the next LED light holder. Repeat the process by attaching the short strips to the LED light holder terminals, sequentially using the same method as before until you attach the last short strip of wire to the terminal of the last light holder. Attach the end of the other long wire strip to the remaining terminal on the last light holder.

9
Attach the end of one of the long strips of wire to a thin wooden pole that is longer and thinner than the flexible plastic tube; a pole that is used to hold the stems of plants is a good choice. Use a strip of plastic tape to hold the wire on the end of the pole.

10
Push the pole and the wire into the end of the clear plastic tube until it comes out the other end. Do this carefully, as you do not want the light connection to break. Pull the pole and wire out of the end of the tube until just before the first LED light gets to the end of the tube. All the LED lights are now in the tube and you have two long wires extending from each end of the tube. These wires will connect to your power source.

11
Multiply the voltage from each LED light by the number of LED bulbs in the tube. LEDs usually require between 1.5 and 3.5 volts. The answer you calculate equates to the voltage you will need your power source to supply.

12
Use a battery or transformer that produces the same voltage you just calculated. Do not use a power source that produces more voltage that you calculated; otherwise, you will blow the LEDs. Using a power source that produces slightly less volts is fine, but it means your lights will not glow as brightly.

13
Attach the end of one of the long strips of wire from the tube to one of the terminals on the power source; it doesn't matter which terminal. Attach the other long wire strip from the other end of the tube to the other terminal on the power source. Your LED flex lights should illuminate.
